Start With the Zone Drawing, Not the Camera Catalog
Every classified area on a site gets mapped before equipment is chosen, and that map is a formal document. OSHA requires that areas designated as hazardous locations be properly documented, and that the documentation reach the people who design, install, and maintain electrical equipment there.
So the opening question isn’t which camera. It’s where the boundary runs.
Pull the drawing. Find the thing you actually need to watch — a pump seal, a loading arm, a tank hatch. Then measure from that subject to the nearest unclassified position with a clear line of sight. Certification Follows the Gas, Not the Room
A camera marked Ex d isn’t approved for hazardous areas in general. Approval is tied to what’s in the air. Does an IP68 rating mean a camera is safe for a classified area?
No. IP68 describes sealing against dust and water ingress. Explosion protection is a separate certification with its own marking, and a camera can be perfectly sealed without being approved for an explosive atmosphere. You need both, and they’re assessed independently.
Can I put a standard camera inside a hazardous area if it’s in an enclosure?
Only when that enclosure and its wiring method carry approval for the location, and the arrangement is documented. Purged and pressurized enclosures exist for exactly this. The enclosure then becomes the certified item, with its own inspection and maintenance obligations attached.
