Crest and Balise said on August 5 that Apple CarPlay and Android Auto will be standard equipment on their 2027 pontoons, with a marine navigation app running at the helm. They are calling it an industry first. That is probably fair.

Here is the short answer for anyone specifying a helm. If you run familiar water in daylight and the alternative is no chart at all, a projected phone is a real gain. If a blank screen would cost you something — a night run, a schedule, a survey, a crew — the phone belongs beside a dedicated navigation source rather than in place of one. Either way, the glass in front of you just picked up a harder job.

Two Ways to Feed a Helm Screen

Strip the branding off and there are two architectures. In one, the screen is the navigation system: charts, sensors and processing all live inside the unit at the helm. In the other, the screen is a monitor and something else does the thinking. Factory CarPlay is the second kind, with a phone as the brain.

The announcement is unusually clear about what that looks like in practice. Like automotive, navigation will display on the same screen as other CarPlay applications, the builders say. So the helm inherits an interface drawn for a car dashboard, where charts and music and messages all share one surface, and the boat gets no vote on how any of it looks.

Neither column is wrong. They break differently, though, and that difference is worth settling before a console layout gets locked. It is not the same question as picking between an all-in-one MFD and a separate display driven by its own computer, because here the source is not marine hardware at all. It is a consumer device the vessel does not own, cannot specify and cannot hold still.

Where the Chart Data Actually Lives

A dedicated source takes this one, and for anyone carrying an obligation it is not close. Official chart data has a pedigree. NOAA puts it plainly: Electronic Navigational Charts (ENC) are vector data sets that support all types of marine navigation, built first for shipboard ECDIS and now feeding chart plotters and recreational systems too.

Consumer navigation apps are good software. Routing is quick, weather is current, and charts refresh without anyone walking a card down the dock. But the vessel does not control that data, cannot audit its vintage, and cannot stop it changing between one trip and the next. On a Saturday pontoon, none of that matters. On a vessel with carriage requirements, or an insurer who asks questions after an incident, it is not a system of record.

The Failure Point Moves Off the Boat

Most buyers underrate this one. A chartplotter goes dark when the vessel’s power goes or the unit dies. That is a short list. A projected phone has a much longer one.

Heat leads it. A phone sitting in an open console in July throttles itself, dims, and eventually refuses to charge at all. After that comes the cable, the port, the wireless pairing, an incoming call that seizes the screen, an operating system update that rearranges the interface overnight, and the plain case of the phone still being in the truck. Any single one of those blanks the navigation display.

A dedicated source simply has less surface area to lose. It sits on the vessel’s power and wakes up when the breaker does, assuming the display was specified for the same duty — which is its own conversation about how a screen rides out the boat’s DC bus when engines start and thrusters load the system.

Who Draws the Interface After Dark

Split decision, leaning dedicated. Brightness itself belongs to the display either way; a sunlight-readable panel stays sunlight-readable no matter what feeds it. What changes is everything above the backlight.

Projection hands the interface to the phone. Day, night and satellite views come from the app, drawn around automotive assumptions: a shaded cabin, a driver glancing down, streetlights outside. A helm at two in the morning is a different problem entirely. Night mode there has to protect dark adaptation rather than just look moody, and the panel has to dim far enough down that the helmsman keeps their night vision. When the source owns the color scheme and the display owns the backlight, nobody owns the result.

What the Screen Has to Do Either Way

Some requirements survive whichever source wins. The display still has to stay readable in direct sun, still has to answer a wet hand, and still has to accept whatever signal the source hands it.

Input count is the quiet one. Take the CarPlay. Daylight, known water and a short run home keep the cost of a blank screen small, and the app’s routing and weather earn their place. Mount the phone somewhere shaded, use a charger that actually holds, and do not let the screen become the whole plan.

You run at night, offshore, or on a clock

Spec a dedicated source and treat the phone as a convenience layer on top of it. Once a lost display costs you a schedule or a safe landfall, you need something that comes up with ship’s power and does not care whether anybody remembered a cable.

You are specifying a helm for a build or a fleet

Settle the source architecture first, then choose glass. Screen count, mounting depth, input routing and power budget all fall out of that decision, and every one of them is expensive to revisit after the console is tooled. Worth saying clearly: a second screen showing the same projected phone is not redundancy. It is one failure rendered twice.

Where a Dedicated Source Genuinely Loses

Cost, and staleness. A marine-grade source is a real line item, and it does not refresh itself. Plenty of helms are running a chartplotter whose charts nobody has updated since the boat changed hands, while the phone in the owner’s pocket has current data, current weather and a better search box. That is a fair criticism and it deserves saying out loud.

It is also the argument for carrying both. A phone is an excellent planning and weather tool, and on most boats it is the best route-planning surface aboard. It just should not be the only thing that knows where the vessel is.

Does CarPlay replace a chartplotter?

No. It projects a phone app onto the helm screen. Charts, GPS position and processing all stay on the phone, so the setup only works while the phone stays powered, cool and connected. Treat it as an additional display source, not as a navigation system in its own right.

Can a marine display accept a CarPlay signal?

That depends on the head unit, not the monitor. CarPlay runs through the boat’s infotainment unit, and whether that unit can send video onward to a second screen is a question for its manufacturer. A marine monitor accepts standard video inputs. The constraint sits upstream of the glass.

Is a second screen worth it when the phone is the source?

For viewing angle and workspace, yes. For redundancy, no. Two screens fed by one phone go dark together. Real backup means a second, independent source, whether that is a chartplotter, a marine computer or paper in a drawer.

Three things. Which source drives each screen, and what that screen shows when the source drops out. Whether the display’s inputs cover every source the helm will carry over its service life, not just the one going in today.
